Preview: Men's Tennis Gears Up for Final Weekend of GLIAC Regular Season

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State men's tennis team will continue its weeklong homestand this weekend as the team hosts the Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday, April 16 and the Grand Valley State University Lakers on Saturday, April 17 in the Student Activity Center in the Norris Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The team will then cap off the regular season of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Monday, April 19 at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton, Mich. against the Michigan Tech Huskies. All three matches are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. starts.

Through the first six matches of the season, the Lakers hold a 0-6 overall record and an 0-4 record in conference play. Last weekend, the men's team played matches against the Northwood Timberwolves and the Wayne State Warriors. Prior to last weekend's contests, the Lakers had not played a match since Saturday, March 20 as COVID-19 protocols went into effect within the Laker tennis program.

The Lakers are coming off a 6-1 loss to Wayne State in the team's most recent match on Monday, April 12. The Lakers dropped the doubles point and five of the six singles matches against the Warriors. No. 4 singles player Ali Sahibzada won his match in two sets by scores of 6-0, and 6-1 for the Lakers. Lake Superior State will look to have a strong showing in the final stretch of the regular season.

Lake Superior State's first opponent of the week will be the Ferris State Bulldogs, who have compiled an 11-0 overall record through a tough spring schedule. The Bulldogs are coming off a 6-1 win over Grand Valley on Wednesday, April 14. Ferris State sits atop the GLIAC standings this season.

The Lakers will then host the Grand Valley State Lakers on Saturday in another GLIAC matchup. The GVSU Lakers have totaled a 7-8 overall record through the spring season. Grand Valley's five match win streak was snapped in the team's most recent match as the Lakers fell to the Ferris State Bulldogs by a 6-1 score.

LSSU's homestand will end as the Lakers will travel to the western end of the Upper Peninsula for a Monday match against the Michigan Tech Huskies. The Huskies have totaled an 0-9 record this season with the team coming off a 7-0 loss to Wayne State on Sunday, April 11. One notable member of the Huskies squad is freshman Eli Pinnoo, brother of Laker Seth Pinnoo
