Tennis Begins 2020 Season with a Road Match at Lawrence Tech

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State men's tennis team will open the 2020 season with a non-conference match against Lawrence Tech on Monday, Feb. 24 at 8:00 a.m. in Southfield, Mich. 

The women's team will also be competing in the non-conference match-up. The Lakers finished the GLIAC season in October with a 2-7 overall record following a season that was depleted by injuries. 

The men's team will begin conference play on Saturday, March 21 as the Lakers head to Wayne State for a 10:00 a.m. match. 

On the women's side, AlexiAnn Drouin will play at the No. 1 singles spot, with Nadege Koua, Muskaan Ranjan, Keegan Malpass, Riley Gilman and Madelin Harrod rounding out the Lakers top six. In doubles play, the duo of Koua and Ranjan will play in the No. 1 doubles pair. Drouin and Malpass will play together as the No. 2 pair while Harrod and Gilman will complete the women's doubles lineup. 

The men's team will hit the court for the first time this season with a lineup consisting mainly of returners. Senior Joe Gilman will play as the team's No.1 single while also playing on the Lakers top doubles pair.  In his junior season, Gilman received First Team All-GLIAC Honors.

Freshman Juho Kantola will play in the No. 2 singles spot for the Lakers and will pair up with Gilman on the top doubles team. 

Sophomore Krishan Taneja, who received Third Team All-GLIAC Honors last season, will be the Lakers No. 3 singles player, while classmates Ali Sahibzada and Harris Rehan will play in the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Rounding out the Lakers singles player is junior Diego Penz.

In doubles play for the Lakers, Sahibzada and Rehan will play as the Lakers No. 2 pair while Taneja and Penz will compete as the Lakers No. 3 doubles tandem. 

This spring, Lake Superior State will host three matches on March 27, April 10 and April 11. Come support the Lakers at the Student Activity Center as all matches begin at 10:00 a.m. and are free of charge to attend.
