Men's Tennis Finishes Sixth at 2019 GLIAC Tournament

MIDLAND, Mich. — Lake Superior State men's tennis finished sixth at the 2019 GLIAC Tournament after losing to Ashland 4-1 in the Fifth-Place Match on Saturday at Greater Midland Tennis Center.

Ashland (13-12) won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point. Lake Superior State's (6-9) No. 2 doubles team of senior Luis Valderrama and sophomore Diego Penz lost 6-1. The No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Ali Sahibzada and Harris Irfan ul Haq was defeated 6-3. The No. 1 doubles match was unfinished.

In singles, Penz won 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 5 match, but the Lakers did not win another match as they went on to lose the team match 4-1. Junior captain Joe Gilman lost 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Sahibzada dropped the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-2 and Taneja was edged 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 3 match. The No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches were unfinished.

With the loss, the Lakers' 2018-19 season comes to an end. This season, Lake Superior State returned to the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2009-10. Gilman and Taneja were named to the 2019 All-GLIAC Men's Tennis Team with Gilman earning first-team honors and Taneja garnering third-team recognition.
