Lakers Suffer 4-0 Setback to Northwood in 2019 GLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament

MIDLAND, Mich. — Fourth-seeded Lake Superior State men's tennis suffered a 4-0 setback against fifth-seeded Northwood in the 2019 GLIAC Tournament on Friday night at Greater Midland Tennis Center.

Lake Superior State's (6-8) No. 2 doubles team of senior Luis Valderrama and sophomore Diego Penz was defeated 6-4. The No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Ali Sahibzada and Harris Irfan ul Haq lost their match 6-2 as Northwood (12-8) claimed the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles match was unfinished.

In singles, Lake Superior State lost the first three matches to make the final score 4-0 in favor of Northwood. Sahibzada lost 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, Penz dropped the No. 5 match 6-4, 6-1 and Irfan ul Haq fell 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 match. The No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches were unfinished.

With the loss, the Lakers move into the Fifth-Place Match where they will face sixth-seeded Ashland at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday at Great Midland Tennis Center. Ashland was edged by third-seeded Ferris State 4-3.  

Earlier this season, Lake Superior State defeated Ashland 5-2 on April 13 at Arbuckle Student Activity Center. That victory clinched the Lakers their spot in the GLIAC Tournament.
