SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Lake Superior State men's tennis student-athlete Krishan Taneja has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week, as announced by the Lake Superior State athletic department on Monday. 

Taneja, a freshman from London, England who is majoring in Geology, was instrumental in Lake Superior State's (6-7, 4-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) 5-2 win over Ashland at home on Saturday that clinched the Lakers a berth in the GLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Taneja and junior captain Joe Gilman won their doubles match against Ashland 7-5. Taneja then won 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles match against the Eagles.

In Sunday's match with No. 22 Wayne State, Taneja and Gilman faced the 24th-ranked doubles team of Griffin Mertz and Taylor Vane. The match went to a tie break where Taneja and Gilman were edged 7-6 (6).   

It is the first time that Taneja has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week as an individual. He was also honored when the entire men's tennis team earned the award on April 2.

Lake Superior State begins play in the 2019 GLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament on April 26 at Greater Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan.
