Men's Tennis Tops Purdue Northwest 5-2

PARK FOREST, Ill. — Lake Superior State men's tennis won 5-2 at Purdue Northwest in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Park Forest Tennis and Fitness Club on Sunday.

With the victory, Lake Superior State (5-6, 3-3 GLIAC) has its most conference wins in a season since 2013-14 when the Lakers finished with a 3-8 mark in conference play.

Lake Superior State took two out of the three doubles matches from Purdue Northwest (4-9, 1-4 GLIAC) to earn the doubles point. The No. 2 doubles team of senior Luis Valderrama and sophomore Diego Penz won 7-6 (7), while the No. 3 pairing of freshmen Harris Irfan ul Haq and Ali Sahibzada won 6-2. The No. 1 doubles team of junior Joe Gilman and freshman Krishan Taneja lost 6-3.

In singles play, the Lakers won four of the six matches to claim the 5-2 team victory. Gilman won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Taneja was victorious 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Penz and Irfan ul Haq claimed 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and 7-6 (4), 6-1) victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Sahibzada fell 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match and Valderrama dropped the No. 4 match 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.   

The Lakers play their final two home matches of the season against Ashland and Wayne State on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14, respectively. All home matches begin at 10 a.m. at Arbuckle Student Activity Center. Admission is free of charge.
