Men’s Tennis Drops Match to Davenport 5-2

CALEDONIA, Mich. — Lake Superior State men's tennis was defeated by Davenport 5-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. 

In doubles play, Lake Superior State (4-6, 2-3 GLIAC) dropped two out of three matches as Davenport (10-7, 2-2 GLIAC) claimed the point. The No. 3 doubles pairing of freshmen Harris Irfan ul Haq and Ali Sahibzada won 6-3. However, the No. 1 doubles team of junior Joe Gilman and freshman Krishan Taneja lost 6-1, while the No. 2 doubles team of senior Luis Valderrama and sophomore Diego Penz lost 6-4. 

In singles, Gilman continued his strong play in the No. 1 position — winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-4. Irfan ul Haq won at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-1, but no other Laker would win a singles match. Sahibzada played a three-set match at No. 2 singles, but fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 10-3. Taneja fell at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-3, Valderrama lost at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1 and Penz dropped the No. 5 match 6-2, 6-1.    

Lake Superior State returns to the court to face Purdue Northwest at 11 a.m. EDT on Sunday in Park Forest, Illinois.
