Men’s Tennis Team Named Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athletes of the Week

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The members of the Lake Superior State men's tennis team have been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athletes of the Week, as announced by the Lake Superior State athletic department on Tuesday. 

Lake Superior State men's tennis (4-5, 2-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) earned the honor after sweeping Michigan Tech 7-0 on Saturday at Arbuckle Student Activity Center. The Lakers have equaled their GLIAC win total from last season.

The Lakers swept the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Junior Joe Gilman and freshman Krishan Taneja won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, senior Luis Valderrama and sophomore Diego Penz claimed the No. 2 doubles match 6-4, while freshmen Harris Irfan ul Haq and Ali Sahibzada captured the No. 3 doubles match 6-1.

In singles play, Lake Superior State went 6-0 to complete the 7-0 victory. Gilman won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Sahibzada won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Taneja won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Penz won 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-1) at No. 4 singles, Irfan ul Haq won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and sophomore Seth Pinnoo won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. It was the first GLIAC singles victory of Sahibzada's collegiate career.

It is the first time that an entire team has been named Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athletes of the Week. Gilman was previously named Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week on March 25.   

Madigan/Pingatore in Insurance Services has been serving the Great Lakes since 1895. The professional team is committed to designing profitable, creative solutions to protect clients, community and the environment.

Lake Superior State is back in action at Davenport and Purdue Northwest on April 6 and April 7, respectively.

The Lakers play their final two home matches of the season against Ashland and Wayne State on April 13 and April 14, respectively. All home matches begin at 10 a.m. at Arbuckle Student Activity Center. Admission is free of charge.
