Men's Tennis Defeats Michigan Tech 7-0

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Lake Superior State men's tennis defeated Michigan Tech 7-0 on Saturday at Arbuckle Student Activity Center.

Lake Superior State (4-5, 2-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) has equaled its GLIAC win total from a year ago when the Lakers finished the season with a 2-6 record in conference play. Michigan Tech is now 2-9, 0-4 GLIAC).

Lake Superior State swept the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Junior Joe Gilman and freshman Krishan Taneja won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, senior Luis Valderrama and sophomore Diego Penz claimed the No. 2 doubles match 6-4, while freshmen Harris Irfan ul Haq and Ali Sahibzada captured the No. 3 doubles match 6-1.

The Lakers went 6-0 in singles matches to complete their 7-0 victory. Gilman, who is the reigning Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week, won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Sahibzada won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Taneja won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Penz won 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-1) at No. 4 singles, Irfan ul Haq won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and sophomore Seth Pinnoo won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

Lake Superior State is back in action at Davenport and Purdue Northwest on April 6 and April 7, respectively.

The Lakers play their final two home matches of the season against Ashland and Wayne State on April 13 and April 14, respectively. All home matches begin at 10 a.m. at Arbuckle Student Activity Center. Admission is free of charge.
