SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State men's tennis student-athlete Joe Gilman has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week, as announced by the Lake Superior State athletic department on Monday.

Gilman, a junior from Holt, Michigan who is majoring in finance and economics, went 2-1 in singles matches last week. Playing at the No. 1 position in singles, Gilman defeated Sebastian Lescoulle, who had previously been ranked No. 39 in NCAA Division II in the Nov. 21, 2018 Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings and has a 19-5 singles record, 7-5, 6-4 on Saturday. Gilman's win over Lescoulle helped Lake Superior State to its first victory (4-3) over Grand Valley State since March 21, 2010 (5-4). Against Ferris State on Sunday, Gilman defeated Stew Sell 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match. With his play on the week, Gilman improved his singles record to 4-4 on the season. Gilman and his doubles partner, freshman Krishan Taneja, also picked up a 7-5 win in the No. 1 doubles match at Northwood on Friday.

Lake Superior State (3-5, 1-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) returns to the court next weekend as the Lakers host Upper Peninsula rival Michigan Tech 2-8 (0-3 GLIAC) on Saturday at 10 a.m. EDT at Arbuckle Student Activity Center.
