Men's Tennis Defeats Grand Valley State for First Time Since 2010

Lake Superior State celebrates its win over Grand Valley State.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Lake Superior State men's tennis picked up it first win over Grand Valley State since 2010 with a 4-3 victory in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Arbuckle Student Activity Center.

The last time Lake Superior State beat Grand Valley State was March 21, 2010 with a score of 5-4. 

In doubles play, Lake Superior State 3-4 (1-1 GLIAC) took the doubles point over Grand Valley State 10-5 (1-1 GLIAC). At No. 1 doubles, junior captain Joe Gilman and freshman Krishan Taneja fell 6-4, while sophomore Diego Penz and senior captain Luis Valderrama won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Harris Irfan ul Haq and Ali Sahibzada clinched the doubles point for LSSU with a 6-3 win in the No. 3 match. 

In singles play, Lake Superior State continued its strong play with Gilman picking up the win at No. 1 singles with a score of 7-5, 6-4. Sahibzada fell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Taneja won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Valderrama battled in a three-set match in No. 4 singles, but fell short 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-4. To clinch the team win for LSSU, Penz won 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles match. Rounding out the lineup was Irfan ul Haq — dropping the No. 6 singles match, 6-3, 3-6, 12-10. 

Lake Superior State is back in action on Sunday at 10 a.m. EDT when the Lakers host Ferris State 3-8 (1-0 GLIAC). Admission is free of charge.
