MIDLAND, Mich. — Lake Superior State men's tennis began Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Northwood University on Friday afternoon.

The Lakers 2-4 (0-1 GLIAC) fell to the Timberwolves 6-5 (1-0 GLIAC) 5-2. 

Lake Superior State came out strong in doubles play as the Lakers took two of the three matches to obtain the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, junior Joe Gilman and freshman Krishan Taneja won 7-5. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Diego Penz and senior Luis Valderrama fell 6-4, while freshmen Harris Irfan ul Haq and Ali Sahibzada won 7-5 at No. 3 doubles. 

The Lakers looked to continue their momentum into singles play, but they dropped five of their six matches to the Timberwolves. 

Gilman lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Sahibzada lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Taneja won, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Valderrama lost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, Pens fell in the No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-1 and finishing out the lineup was Irfan ul Haq, who fell in a close three-set match (6-2, 5-7, 10-8). 

Lake Superior State returns home for matches on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. EDT, with admission free of charge. The Lakers face Grand Valley State on Saturday and Ferris State on Sunday at Arbuckle Student Activity Center.
