Laker Tennis Finishes Road Trip, Men Win 7-2, Women Win 8-1

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up their five-match road trip with wins over Lawrence Tech on Saturday night in Southfield, Michigan.  

The men's tennis team won 7-2. In doubles, the Lakers took two of the three matches. At No. 1 doubles, junior Joe Gilman and freshman Ali Sahibzada lost 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, senior Luis Valderrama and sophomore Diego Penz won 9-7, and at No. 3 doubles, freshman pairing, Harris Irfan ul Haq and Krishan Taneja won 8-5. 

In singles, the Lakers continued their momentum with winning five of the six singles matches. At No. 1 singles, Gilman fell, 7-6, 7-5. At No. 2 singles Sahibzada won 6-4, 4-6, 10-3. At No. 3 singles, Taneja won 7-6(4), 3-6, 10-8. At No. 4 singles, Valderrama won 6-3, 7-6(5). At No. 5, Penz won 7-6(1), 6-4, and wrapping up the lineup was Irfan ul Haq who won with a commanding score of 6-2, 6-1. 

The men's team finished the spring break trip with a 2-3 record and will start conference play March 22 when they travel to Northwood. 

The women's team won 8-1 against the Blue Devils. At No. 1 doubles, freshman Nadege Koua and senior Tara Harvey won 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore AlexiAnn Drouin and freshman Keegan Malpass won 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, senior duo Kirsten Malpass and Allison Grandfield won by default. 

In singles play, at No. 1 singles, Drouin won 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2, Koua won, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Harvey won 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Keegan Malpass lost 6-1, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Kirsten Malpass won by default and at No. 6 singles, Grandfield won by default. 

The women's team finished their season by winning their last three matches and finished the season with an 8-9 record.
