Laker Men's and Women's Tennis Defeat Davis & Elkins 7-0

DAVIS, W. Va. — The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams both defeated Davis & Elkins College 7-0 in nonconference action on Wednesday.

In men's doubles action, Lake State picked up the doubles point. Freshman Ali Sahibzada and junior Joe Gilman fell at the No. 1 spot, 6-4. At No. 2, sophomore Diego Penz and senior Luis Valderrama won 6-4. The No. 3 pairing of freshmen Harris Irfan ul Haq and Krishan Taneja won 6-3.

At No. 1 singles, Gilman won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Sahibzada also picked up a win at the No. 2 spot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Taneja, at No. 3, won 6-3, 6-1. At No. 4, Valderrama won 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Penz won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot, and Irfan ul Haq won 6-0, 6-2.

The Laker women started off by picking up the doubles point after winning each doubles match. Senior Tara Harvey and freshman Nadege Koua won 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, sophomore AlexiAnn Drouin and freshman Keegan Malpass won 6-1, and at the No. 3 pairing, seniors Kirsten Malpass and Allison Grandfield won 7-6 (3).

In singles action, Drouin won at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4. At No. 2, Koua won 6-1, 6-3. Harvey, at No. 3, won 6-2, 6-1. Keegan Malpass won 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 at No. 4, while Kirsten Malpass also picked up a win at the No. 5 spot, 8-3. Grandfield picked up an 8-1 win at the No. 6 spot.

The Lakers continue nonconference road action on Thursday when they face West Virginia Wesleyan College, followed by Lawrence Tech on Saturday. They begin Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on March 22 when they visit Northwood and then head home for matches against Grand Valley State on March 23 and Ferris State on March 24. Home matches begin at 10 a.m. EST in the Arbuckle Student Activity Center and are free of charge.
