LSSU Tennis Competes at Wisconsin-Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams travelled to Green Bay, Wisconsin Sunday to play in a non-conference tilt against University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

In doubles play, at No. 1 doubles, Harris Irfan ul Haq and Ali Sahibzada lost 6-1, while No. 2 doubles, Joe Gilman and Diego Penz won 7-5. But it wasn't enough to pick up the doubles point while Luis Valderrama and Krishan Taneja lost 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles competition, the Lakers looked to find some momentum, but couldn't squeeze out a victory. At No. 1 singles, junior captain, Gilman lost 6-3, 6-4. Freshman, Taneja lost in a super tiebreak, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5. At No. 3 singles, Sahibzada lost 6-4, 6-2.

Rounding out the lineup was Irfan ul Haq at No. 4, he lost 6-3, 6-3 and at No.5, Penz lost in a super tiebreak, 6-1, 4-6, 10-3. Finishing out the Laker squad was Luis Valderrama at No. 6, he lost 6-4, 6-3. The men fall 7-0 to the Phoenix.

The women's team played an exhibition match against UWGB and showed potential against the Division I squad and looked good entering conference play.

The men's next match will be in the spring while the women start conference play as they host Wayne State and Ashland on September 22 and 23.

Matches will be played at the Arbuckle Student Activity Center, admission is free.
