GRIFFITH, Ind. – Lake Superior State men's tennis picked up its fourth-straight victory Monday with a 9-0 sweep over Calumet College of St. Joseph at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club in Griffith, Indiana.
The Lakers (4-3) rolled to a sweep in the doubles portion to open the match, defeating the Crimson Wave (0-2) while surrendering just three sets total. Jake Prime and Luis Valderrama opened with an 8-1 victory over Santiago Castaneda and Nillson Cano in No. 1 doubles to improve their combined record to 4-3 on the season. Freshman Joseph Gilman and junior Ieuan Lister improved to 5-2 in No. 2 doubles with a clean-sheet, 8-0, victory over Erwin Krackow and Andres Farfan, followed by a No. 3 doubles victory for LSSU with Stephen Prica and Miles Munro scoring an 8-2 decision over Felipe Espinosa and Ishup Singh.
LSSU scored straight-set victories in each of the six singles matches to close out the team match win.
Prime opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Castaneda, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 victory by Valderrama over Cano in No. 2 singles.
Gilman improved to a 7-0 record in singles play this season with a pair of 6-1 set victories over Krackow in third singles.
In No. 4 singles, Lister improved his individual record to 4-3 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Farfan.
The Lakers finished off the victory with wins by Peter Summers in No. 5 singles and Munro in the sixth slot. Summers scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over Espinosa and Munro closed the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Ishup Singh.
The week-long Spring Break trip for the Lakers continues on Wednesday with a match at Lewis University.
