Mag wins first two ITA matches before falling in quarterfinals

MIDLAND - Sophomore Razvan Mag defeated Andreas Hammer of Missouri-St. Louis, 6-1, 6-2, and Bellarmine's Nate Matthews, 6-1, 6-4, during the first day of competition at the Wilson ITA Great Lakes Regional. Mag, who is seeded 10th, takes on No. 3 seed Uno Lapimaa of Lewis on Saturday.

Pawel Wegrzyn finished 1-1, beating Northern Kentucky's Rico Weaver in the first round, 6-3, 6-4, and losing to No. 14 seed Bertrand Moulin, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round.

Brandon Clayton lost in the first round, 6-0, 6-0, to Rockhurst's Zach Newell.

In doubles, Lakers Mag and Sergiu Laza were also 2-0, beating Poe and Henning of Indianapolis and Fraser and Knoll of Northern Kentucky by back-to-back 8-6 scores. They are seeded sixth.

Clayton and Wegrzyn defeated Bellarmine's Skaggs and Wang in the first round, 8-2, then lost to Rockhurst's Newell and Newell, 8-3.

Day 2 Results: Lapimaa defeated Maag during Saturday's quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0. In the doubles quarterfinals, No. 3 seed Garcia Santos and Kazamakis of Drury defeated Mag and Laza, 8-2.
