Laker Hockey Narrowly Falls to Mavericks in Closing Moments

MANKATO, Minn. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (14-18-1, 10-12-1 CCHA) narrowly fell to the Minnesota State Mavericks (16-12-4, 12-8-2 CCHA) by a final score of 4-3 on Saturday.

The Mavericks were able to get on the board first just over halfway through the opening period with a goal from Sam Morton, but at the 15:58 mark, Cole Craft (North Bay, Ont.) tied up the score at 1-1 with help from first-year players Carter Batchelder (Savage, Minn.) and Jack Blanchett (Monroe, Mich.).

Midway through the second period, John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) slotted home his second goal of the weekend, this time taking advantage of a power play opportunity after being set up by Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) and Batchelder, but the Mavericks managed to tie up the score shortly thereafter. Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) would then retake the lead for the Lakers a few minutes later, stealing away the puck to score unassisted and shorthanded to close out a wild few minutes of game time in the second period.

However, Minnesota State was able to come back in the third period with two unanswered goals, including the game-winner in the final minute of regulation to steal the victory.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, March 1 for their regular season finale against Ferris State in Taffy Abel Arena with puck drop scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
