PREVIEW: Laker Hockey Set to Host Michigan Tech

PREVIEW: Laker Hockey Set to Host Michigan Tech

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) Hockey program is set to host the Michigan Tech Huskies for the only two-game series between the two programs of the regular season. LSSU will also be honoring the centennial of their arena's namesake, Clarence "Taffy" Abel, becoming the first Native American to compete at the Winter Olympics in 1924 during the second intermission of Friday's contest.

  • The Huskies lead the all time series between the two programs 55-29-9, and they are led by LSSU hockey alum and Sault Ste. Marie native Joe Shawhan.
  • The Lakers will be looking to bounce back after a one-point weekend from a home-and-home series against Ferris State while the huskies came away with four points against Bemidji State this past weekend.
  • The Lakers and Huskies enter the weekend ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, in the CCHA standings with a mere two points separating them. However, both teams have not performed as well on the road with the Lakers sitting at 5-8 outside Taffy Abel Arena and Michigan Tech at 3-5-2 away from Houghton.
  • The two games this weekend mark the only regular season meetings between the two programs this season.
  • Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) enters the weekend on a three-game goal streak, and he has registered a point in every game since the turn of the calendar year. Milburn's 23 points ranks second on the team behind only senior Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) (27). Milburn also ranks second in the CCHA in +/- at +11.
  • The Lakers penalty kill unit has been one of the best in the nation by percentage, and they currently rank tied for fourth in the country with Quinnipiac at 86.7%. Meanwhile, the LSSU power play also ranks first in the CCHA which features a league-leading seven power play goals from Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.).
  • LSSU continues to lead the conference in scoring, averaging 3.28 goals per game, but they will face a Husky defense that holds opponents to the third-lowest margin on average in the CCHA, led by All-American goaltender Blake Pietila.
  • The Michigan Tech offense is led by the reigning CCHA Rookie of the Week Isaac Gordon with 21 points, and he is followed closely by Ryland Mosley with 19.  However, the Pietila family will still be very much on the radar of the Lakers' scouting report with Logan and Chase sitting at 17 and 16 points, respectively, Jed minding the blue line, and All-American goaltender Blake Pietila between the pipes.
  • The Huskies have also added CCHA Preseason Player of the Year Austen Swankler to the active roster for the second half of the season after transferring from Bowling Green.
  • Westcott is currently leading the team in goal scoring with 13 and points with 27.
  • Ross Roloson (Woodbury, Minn.) leads all Laker defensemen in scoring with 11 points (4G, 7A).
  • Seven different Lakers have recorded at least ten points so far this season, led by Westcott's 27. C. Milburn (23), Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) (19), Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) (18), Tritt (17), John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) (16), R. Roloson (11), and Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) (10) have also reached double-digit scoring.
  • Laker goaltender Ethan Langenegger's (Kamloops, B.C.) 639 saves are the top mark in the CCHA so far this season (seventh nationally).
