PREVIEW: Laker Hockey to Open 2023-24 Cappo Cup Series on Friday

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (5-3-0, 2-0-0 CCHA) is set to begin their journey to reclaim the Cappo Cup when they travel to take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats (1-6-1, 1-3-0 CCHA) for the first two of four games in the regular season series on Friday and Saturday.

Series Preview                                                                                          

  • The Lakers will begin their journey to win back the Cappo Cup at Northern Michigan after the Wildcats won the regular season series last year three games to one. LSSU had previously held the cup for the prior three-consecutive years. 
  • The Wildcats lead the all-time series between the two programs 80-53-13.
  • The Lakers are coming off of a weekend sweep over the Bemidji State Beavers to open CCHA play, extending their winning streak to four games. Meanwhile, the Wildcats currently stand at 1-3-0 in the conference after falling in both games last weekend at St. Thomas. 
  • Ethan Langenegger (Kamloops, B.C.) enters the weekend as the reigning CCHA Goaltender of the Week after turning away 57 of 61 shots faced to lead the league in wins (2) and saves (57) on the weekend with a 1.96 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage.
  • Northern Michigan rookie Tanner Latsch was crowned as the CCHA Rookie of the Month for October, and he is tied for the league-lead in goals with seven. 
  • The Wildcats also boast the top two players in the league in terms of assists with Josh Zinger (9) and Andre Ghantous (8), but Lakers Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) and Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) are close behind, tied for third with six each.
  • Westcott and Ghantous enter the weekend tied for the league-lead in points with 11 each.
  • No player in the CCHA has served more penalty minutes than Northern Michigan's Isack Bandu (28 minutes on 7 penalties) entering the weekend.
  • Westcott and Latsch are two of only four players in the CCHA to have recorded a hat trick so far this season.
  • Westcott is currently leading the Lakers in scoring with 11 points on five goals and six assists.
  • Sophomore Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) capped off a six-game point streak after scoring the game-winner in overtime on Nov. 3 against Bemidji State, and he boasts the top +/- rating in the CCHA entering the weekend at +8.. 
  • Rookie John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) had his first three-point game on Nov. 3 (1-2-3).
  • Westcott had three assists in a game for the first time in his career on Nov. 3.
  • Defenseman Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) had the first three-point performance of his career on Nov. 4 with a goal and two assists. 
  • Rookie Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.) recorded the first points of his career with a goal and an assist on Nov. 4 against Bemidji State.
  • Rookie Luke Levandowski (Rosemount, Minn.) scored the first goal of his career on Nov. 4 against Bemidji State.
