FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Lake Superior State men's hockey team recorded a 1-1 tie but were able to earn the extra league point in double overtime against the Alaska Nanooks on Saturday, Jan. 11 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) game in Fairbanks. 

The first period was evenly played between the two conference foes with Alaska having the advantage in shots 11-8 as well as holding a 1-0 lead in the game at the end of 20 minutes of play. Alaska's Kylar Hope would score following a play started by Steven Jandric and Max Newton to eventually feed him the puck in the slot. Hope would get a quick shot off that would beat Lakers netminder Mareks Mitens for a 1-0 Nanooks lead. 

At the close of the second period, despite giving up the Nanooks power play opportunities, the Lakers would still trail by the single tally. The Lakers were able to generate a few quality scoring chances in the period including one while shorthanded by Max Humitz and an almost goal from senior forwards Bryan Basilico and Brendan McKay but could not find a way to beat Nanooks goaltender Gustavs Grigals.

To start off the third period, Pete Veillette had a great scoring chance but the puck was stopped by Grigals to keep the 1-0 lead. 

At 13:21 of the third period, the Lakers were able to beat Grigals for the first time in the game as Ashton Calder scored his sixth goal of the season to tie the game at one. The play began following an offensive zone face-off win by Calder and the puck would make its way to Tyler Anderson, who was at the blue line. Anderson sent the puck to Veillette who stickhandled around the Alaska defenders to fire the shot towards Nanook net. Calder was able to get a piece of the puck on its way past Grigals to even the game.

With the first sixty minutes of play ending in a tie, the two teams played a four-on-four overtime period but were unable to score to record a win by NCAA standards. For league purposes, the game went into a second overtime of three-on-three hockey to decide which team receives the extra WCHA point. Veillette netted the second overtime goal for the Lakers after being set up on the play by Riedell and Humitz to give the Lakers the hard fought extra point. 

Mitens finished the game with 25 saves while Grigals stopped 32 shots in the game by the Lakers.

The Lakers will have their first bye week of the season next weekend after returning from Alaska. The following weekend Lake State will resume play against Alaska Anchorage for the second time this month as the Lakers will host a series on Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25.
