Lakers Drop Series Opener to Alaska Anchorage on the Road

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Lake Superior State men's hockey team dropped a 2-0 game to the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in a Wetern Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) game on Saturday, Jan. 4 in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Seawolves got on the scoresheet first when Zach Court netted his first collegiate goal at 15:31 of the first period. The play continued following the goal as the officials initially waived off the goal to continue action. After a lengthy review, the call on the ice was overturned as the puck did cross the goal line to give Alaska Anchorage a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the Seawolves would double their lead when Rylee St. Onge capitalized on a rush up the ice that saw Lakers goaltender Mareks Mitens mishandle the puck after a poke check. Alaska Anchorage would take advantage of the loose puck to go ahead 2-0 in the game at 13:20 of the period.

The Lakers best scoring opportunity came with 5:17 left in the second when Pete Veillette would fire a shot on goal that Seawolves netminder Kris Carlson made a sliding cross crease save to keep the Lakers off the board.

The Lakers would have their first power play opportunities of the game in the third period, including one only 1:27 into the period. Lake State was not able to capitalize on either of the two power plays.

Despite outshooting the Seawolves 29-22 in the game and 13-2 in the third period, the Lakers were unable to solve Carlson as he stopped all 29 shots to record the 2-0 win. Mitens stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced in the game.

The Lakers and the Seawolves will meet again tomorrow Sunday, Jan. 5 at 7:00 p.m. EST in Anchorage, Alaska.
