Mareks Mitens Named Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State hockey student-athlete Mareks Mitens has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week, as announced by the Lake Superior State athletic department on Tuesday, Dec. 16. 

Mitens, a junior goaltender from Ventspils, Latvia, led the Lakers to a weekend split against the No. 10 ranked Bowling Green Falcons in a home series on Dec. 13 and 14.The Lakers goaltender started both games and played 119:41 minutes in net for the team this weekend making 64 saves on 67 shots. In the series opener, Mitens allowed one goal in the 2-0 loss as he made a season-high 35 saves in 58:03 minutes played. On Saturday, the International Business Administration major allowed a pair of goals but would make 29 saves in the effort to help secure the overtime win for Lake State. Mitens' weekend save percentage (.950) led the WCHA, while his 64 saves were second most, and his 1.50 goals against average ranked fourth among his league counterparts. 

For his strong weekend of play, Mitens was named the WCHA Goaltender of the Week on Monday, Dec. 16. This is the second WCHA honor for Mitens in his career, and the first of the 2019-20 season for the Laker goalie. 

It is the second time that Mitens has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week in his career.

Following a two-week stretch without any games, the Lakers will resume play on Saturday, Dec. 28 and Sunday, Dec. 29 in Burlington, Vt. at the TD Bank Catamount Cup. The Lakers will play Providence in the first game at 4:00 p.m. and tournament host, Vermont, on the second day of play at 7:00 p.m
