SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Mareks Mitens has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Goaltender of the Week, as announced by conference officials on Monday, Dec. 16. 

Mitens was strong in goal against the No. 10 Bowling Green Falcons at home this weekend allowing three goals on 67 shots in the pair of games. The Lakers dropped the series opener by a score of 2-0 but responded with a 3-2 overtime on Saturday night at the Taffy Abel Arena. With the weekend split, the Lakers record sits at 6-15-1 overall and 4-9-1 in WCHA play this season.

WCHA Goaltender of the Week - Mareks Mitens 

Lake Superior State junior goaltender Mareks Mitens led the Lakers to a weekend split against the No. 10 ranked Bowling Green Falcons in a home series split on Dec. 13-14. The Latvian netminder started both games for the Lakers and played 119:41 in net for the team this weekend making 64 saves on 67 shots. In the series opener, Mitens allowed one goal in the 2-0 loss making a season-high 35 saves in 58:03 minutes played. On Saturday, Mitens allowed a pair of goals but would make 29 saves in the effort to help secure the overtime win for Lake State. Mitens' weekend save percentage (.950) led the WCHA, while his 64 saves were second most, and his 1.50 goals against average ranked fourth among his league counterparts. 

This is the second WCHA honor for Mitens, and the first of the 2019-20 season for the Laker goalie. 

Following a two-week stretch without any games, the Lakers will resume play on Saturday, Dec. 28 and Sunday, Dec. 29 in Burlington, Vt. at the TD Bank Catamount Cup. The Lakers will play Providence in the first game at 4:00 p.m. and tournament host, Vermont, on the second day of play at 7:00 p.m.
