Lakers Fall to No. 17 Bowling Green in Opening Game of Weekend Series

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey team dropped a 5-0 game to Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) opponent No. 17 Bowling Green to Friday, Nov. 22 in Bowling Green, Ohio. 

The Falcons got off to a strong start in the game scoring two goals in the first period in a span of 31 seconds. Max Johnson netted the game's first goal at 6:25 while Sam Craggs would double the Falcons lead to 2-0 at 6:56 of the first. 

In the second period, Bowling Green would capitalize on a power play opportunity when Cameron Wright scored at 7:19. 

The Lakers would rely on their penalty killers in the third period to kill off a five-minute major penalty that was assessed to Alex Ambrosio at 3:47 of the period. Following the successful penalty kill, the Lakers would get their own power play opportunity. Bowling Green's Connor Ford would drive to the net while killing a penalty and was awarded a penalty shot. Ford was able to beat Lake State netminder Mareks Mitens to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead. 

Bowling Green would seal the win with an empty net goal in the final minute of play as Evan Dougherty tallied an empty net goal to put the Falcons ahead 5-0. 

The Falcons had a 32-18 shot advantage in the game. Mitens finished the game with 27 saves in the game while Bowling Green netminder Eric Dop stopped all 18 Laker shots to record a shutout in the game. 

The Lakers will continue WCHA play next weekend as they host Bemidji State for a weekend series at the Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The series is set for a 7:07 p.m. start on both Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23.
