SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey team dropped a 2-1 game to Michigan Tech on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Taffy Abel Arena. 

The Huskies would net the game's first goal at 14:37 of the first period when Brian Halonen fired a shot over the shoulder of Lake State's netminder Mareks Mitens to give Michigan Tech a 1-0 lead.

Only 12 seconds later, the Lakers would even the game. Pete Veillette would fire the puck just outside the top of the circle following a rush up the ice. The goal was assisted by Yuki Miura, who extended his point streak to three games, and Lukas Kaelble. Veillette's third goal of the season topped his previous career high and would set his point total at eight which also tied his previous season high in points.  

In the second period, the Lakers would have a great opportunity to grab the lead as they had a full two-minute five-on-three power play advantage. Despite generating a number of quality chances, Michigan Tech was able to kill off the pair of penalties to keep the game even at one. 

The Huskies would capitalize on their second period play power opportunity as Trenton Bliss would score at 10:04 of the second period to regain Michigan Tech's lead. Bliss' third goal of the series was set up by Seamus Donohue and Erid Gotz. The goal would prove to be the eventual game winner and was the second night in a row that Bliss would net the game winning goal. 

In the third period, despite the constant pressure that the Lakers would put on the Huskies, LSSU was unable to beat Huskies goaltender Matt Jurusik in the final period. The Lakers would outshoot the Huskies, 18-7 in the third period. Lake State would finish the game with a 35-18 advantage in shots. 

Mitens finished the game with 16 saves while Jurusik was strong in net as he fended off 34 shots from the Lakers in the meeting. 

In addition to holding the shot advantage, the Lakers also dominated in faceoffs in the game. Lake State won 33 face-offs while losing 17 to Michigan Tech. Freshman forward Dustin Manz led the Lakers going 10-for-14 in the circle while senior Brendan McKay also had a strong night winning eight draws and only losing two.

The Lakers will continue WCHA play next weekend on the road against Bowling Green at the Slater Family Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio. The series is set for a 7:07 p.m. start on both Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23.
