BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Lake Superior State hockey team suffered its second loss in a row to the Bemidji State Beavers on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn. With the 5-1 loss, the Lakers record falls to 4-8-0 overall and 2-2-0-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.
The Lakers opened the game applying early pressure on the Beavers and goaltender Zach Driscoll, looking to net the game's first goal. Despite some early chances, the Lakers fell behind 1-0 at 13:54 of the period when Adam Brady scored a power play goal for Bemidji.
Lake State would even the score before the end of the first period, however, as Alex Ambrosio would tally his second goal of the season. Ambrosio and Yuki Miura would rush up the ice in the last minute of play in the period. Miura fired a shot on goal that trickled behind Driscoll and Ambrosio would tap the puck past the goal line to get the Lakers on the board at 19:13. Bryan Basilico would record the secondary assist on the goal, his first point of the season.
The Bemidji Beavers would strike three times in the second period on Laker netminder Roman Bengert, who got his second start in goal of the season. Alex Adams would score the eventual game winner at 2:03 of the second and Ethan Somoza would score to make it 3-1 only a little over a minute after. The Beavers would cap off the second period with a late goal from Nick Cardelli to hold a 4-1 lead at the end of forty minutes of play.
The third period would open with Mareks Mitens stepping into the game for the Lakers. The Lakers could not beat Driscoll again in the game while the Beavers would put the game out of reach when Ross Armour notched an empty net goal with 3:15 left in regulation to put the final score at 5-1.
Bemidji State held the advantage in shots in the game by a final mark of 26-19. The Laker goaltending tandem of Bengert and Mitens made a combined 20 saves in the game while Driscoll stopped 18 shots in the Beavers win.
The Lakers had three power play opportunities in the game, including a five minute major penalty in the third period, but were unable to capitalize. The LSSU penalty kill went 3-for-4 in the game.
The Lakers will return home for a weekend series against the Michigan Tech Huskies next weekend on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Taffy Abel Arena. Both games are set for a 7:00 p.m. start. The pair of games will include the Laker Blue, Laker Gold! promotion - more details here.
