Lakers Sweep Ferris State with a 4-3 Win

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey team closed out its first Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with a 4-3 win over the Ferris State Bulldogs to cap off the weekend sweep. Pete Veillette netted the game winning goal for the Lakers, Collin Saccoman led the team with a pair of power play goals, and freshman Louis Boudon added a goal to extend his point streak to five games. Mareks Mitens registered his fourth win of the season for the Lakers. The Lakers improve to 4-6-0 overall and 2-0-0-0 in conference play.

Identical to the first game of the series, the first period would end scoreless. The two netminders would stand tall in net as there was a combined 25 shots on goal (12 for the Lakers and 13 for the Bulldogs) in the frame. 

In the second period, the Lakers would capitalize in the final seconds of a five minute major penalty that was called on Dominic Lutz for kneeing. Collin Saccoman would score the power play goal for the Lakers at 13:45 to give the Lakers the game's first lead. The Lakers power play unit connected a set of passes from Ashton Calder to Louis Boudon, who would dish a cross ice pass to Saccoman who would put the puck past Ferris State's goalie Carter McPhail for the 1-0 advantage. 

Only :15 seconds later, Dallas Tulik, who was serving the major penalty for Ferris State, would beat Lakers netminder Mareks Mitens on a breakaway to even the score at one. 

Before the second period expired, Boudon would regain the Lakers lead after he was fed a pass from classmate Dustin Manz and fired a shot that went past McPhail and into the back of the net. 

Holding a 2-1 lead entering the final period of play, the Lakers would once again find themselves with a five minute power play opportunity after Ferris State's Coale Norris was assessed a checking from behind major penalty. Saccoman would net his second goal of the game and his fifth goal in three games as he scored a goal that was set up by the same forwards, Boudon and Calder, as his first goal of the game. 

The eventual game winner for the Lakers would come from Pete Veillette, who scored his second goal in as many games, to give the Lakers a 4-1 lead at 9:04 of the third period. Hampus Eriksson and Calder would notch the assists on the goal. 

The Bulldogs would rally late in the third period, as Tulik would record his second goal of the game at 15:48 of the third period to shrink the Lakers lead to 4-2. Exactly three minutes later at 18:48, Blake Evennou would score a power play goal with McPhail pulled in favor of the extra attacker to make it a one goal game. 

The Lakers would keep the Bulldogs off the scoresheet in the final 1:12 of regulation to clinch the weekend sweep and start off conference play with a pair of wins. 

Mitens registered his fourth win of the season as he made 20 saves for the Lakers in the victory. McPhail stopped 33 shots from the Lakers. The Lakers finished the game outshooting Ferris State by a 37-23 margin.

The Lakers will continue conference play next weekend as the team heads to Bemidji, Minn. to take on the Bemidji State Beavers in a two-game series. The series opener will be played on Friday, Nov. 8 at 8:07 p.m. while the team's will close out the weekend on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7:07 p.m. at the Sanford Center.
