Lakers Rally Against Michigan Falls Short

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey team fell to the Michigan Wolverines by a final score of 4-3 on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Lakers record stands at 2-4-0 following the first three weekends of play.

The Lakers trailed Michigan by three goals following the first 20 minutes of play. The Wolverines opened the game's scoring at 4:19 when Jimmy Lambert's shot from the boards went over the shoulder of Laker goalie Mareks Mitens. Michigan forward Jack Becker would find the back of the net twice in the frame to put the Wolverines ahead by three goals heading into the second period.

In the second period, Lake State's comeback began at 5:53 as Hampus Eriksson netted his second goal of the season to get the Lakers on the board. The play would begin when Lukas Kaelble took a shot from the blueline that would eventually make its way to Yuki Miura, who was positioned behind the Wolverines goal line. Miura would connect with Eriksson who was situated right in front of Wolverine netminder Strauss Mann. Eriksson won the battle for the loose puck to put the game at 3-1.

Less than a minute later, at 6:38, Louis Boudon's first career goal would put the Lakers within a goal. Kaelble would once again start the play that led to the goal as he carried the puck through the offensive zone and got off a shot that would make its way through the crease to an open Boudon. Boudon had an open net to fire the puck into to make it a one goal game.

Before the end of the second, Michigan would regain a two goal lead as Jack Summers notched his first goal of the season, the eventual game winner, to make it a 4-2 game after forty minutes of action.

Only :22 seconds into the third period, the Lakers would once again trim the Wolverines lead to one goal when Kaelble netted his first goal of the season. Miura notched his second assist of the night when he slid a pass to Humitz who found Kaelble open in the circle. The Laker defenseman stepped into the shot to make it a one goal game.

Despite outshooting Michigan 12-5 in the third period, the Lakers were not able to beat Mann again before time expired. Both teams finished the game with 26 shots.

Mitens made 22 saves in his sixth straight start for the Lakers, including 11 stops in the first period. Mann would stop 23 of the shots he faced from the Lakers.

The Lakers will travel to South Bend, Ind. next weekend for a pair of games against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Compton Family Ice Arena.
