ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's hockey team fell to the University of Michigan Wolverines by a score of 4-0 on Friday, Oct. 18 at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Lakers record through the first five games of the season sits at 2-3-0. 

At the end of the first period, the Lakers fell behind by two goals. Through five games, the Lakers had yet to trail following the first period. Michigan took the lead at 5:30 of the period when Nolan Moyle netted a power play goal. After a failed clearing attempt by the Lakers penalty killers, the loose puck found its way to Moyle who was open to take the shot that beat Laker netminder Mareks Mitens to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. 

The Lakers would come close to tying the game with a number of chances, including a shot that rang off the post from Max Humitz and a rebound opportunity for Hampus Eriksson on the doorstep. 

The Wolverines doubled their lead with 1:51 left in the period when Nick Blankenburg fired a shot from the blueline that made its way through traffic, changing direction its way to the back of the net. 

Lake State would begin the second period with a scoring chance from Ashton Calder in the opening minute of play that was stopped by Michigan goalie, Strauss Mann. The Lakers came close to cutting Michigan's lead in half when Humitz dropped a pass to Alex Ambrosio who got off a shot on goal that was stopped by Mann but the puck richoted back to stop on the goal line before Mann covered up the puck to stop play. 

At the 10-minute mark of the second period, Michigan extended the lead to 3-0 when Jack Becker's shot from the circle beat Mitens. Mitens would prevent the Wolverines from adding to their lead as he stopped a breakaway from Garrett Van Whye late in the period. 

Despite a strong effort, the Lakers were not able to comeback against Michigan in the final period of play. Will Lockwood's goal at 13:57 of the period would put the game out of reach for the Lakers. 

Mitens finished the game with 24 saves for the Lakers, including 11 saves in the first period. Mann also recorded 24 saves in the shutout win for the Wolverines. LSSU was outshot by Michigan by a final tally of 28-24 in the game. 

The Lakers will look to split the series as the team's will face-off again tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
