Laker Hockey Announces 2019-20 Team Captains

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Lake Superior State men's hockey head coach Damon Whitten has announced that senior defenseman Collin Saccoman and senior forward Max Humitz will serve as team captains for the 2019-20 season. 

Senior forward Brendan McKay and junior defenseman Lukas Kaelble were named alternate captains for the 2019-20 season. 

Saccoman has recorded 48 points (14G, 34A) in 100 career games played for the Lakers. The Stillwater, Minn. native set career-highs in goals (10) and points (25) last season while also leading all Laker defensemen in both categories. The defenseman scored his first collegiate game winning goal last season in a 4-2 win at Ferris State on Feb. 2. Saccoman, a Criminl  Justice major, led all WCHA defensemen in goals last season and was named WCHA Defenseman of the Month for two consecutive months (Nov. & Dec). 

Humitz has recorded 76 points (42G, 34A) in 108 career games played for the Lakers.The Livonia, Mich. native set career-highs in goals (16), assists (17), points (33), plus/minus (+14) and game-winning goals (4) during the 2018-19 season. The forward is the highest returning scorer from last year's team and his four game-winning goals was the most of any player on the Lakers roster in 2018-19. Humitz, a Kinesiology major, is tied for 3rd in career goals scored out of all returning players in NCAA Division I Hockey heading into the 2019-20 season. 

McKay has registered 15 points (4G, 11A) in 72 career games played for the Lakers. The Toronto, Ont. native posted season highs in goals (3), assists (10) and points (13) during his junior season. McKay, a Finance and Economics major, notched two multi-point games last season and was named the Soo Blueliners Most Improved Player in 2018-19.

Kaelble has posted 30 points (3G, 27A) in 63 career games at Lake State. The Manheim, Germany native set career-highs in goals (2), assists (21) and points (23) during his sophomore campaign in 2018-19. Kaelble, an International Business Administration major, led all Laker defenseman last season in assists and plus/minus (+16).

All four captains were named to the 2018-19 WCHA All-Academic Team. 

Lake Superior State will open its 54th season in a home game against non-conference opponent, Merrimack College, on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m at Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers will face-off against the Warriors again on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 5:00 p.m.
