Four Lakers Earn All-WCHA Honors

Four Lakers earned All-WCHA honors.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Four Lake Superior State hockey student-athletes have garnered All-WCHA or WCHA All-Rookie honors, as by Western Collegiate Hockey Association officials on Thursday.

Senior forward Diego Cuglietta earned All-WCHA First Team honors, while junior forward Max Humitz and senior forward Anthony Nellis were named to the All-WCHA Third Team. Freshman forward Ashton Calder tied with Owen Sillinger of Bemidji State to earn a spot on the WCHA All-Rookie Team

Cuglietta, a history major from Kamloops, British Columbia, has tallied 24 goals and 16 assists for 40 points this season. He leads the nation in goals scored, while leading the WCHA in assists, plus-minus (+23) and faceoff wins (479). He has also earned WCHA Forward of the Week honors earlier this season and he was named the Great Lakes Invitational MVP. He currently has 99 career points (49-50--99) in 145 games played in a Laker uniform. Cuglietta is a nominee for the 2019 Hobey Baker Award.

Humitz, a kinesiology major from Livonia, Michigan who has been named WCHA Forward of the Week twice in 2018-19, has 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points, while garnering a +14 rating this season. He is also the team leader with four game-winning goals, and he has put together point streaks of six games and four games. In his career, he has tallied 42 goals and 33 assists for 75 points.

Nellis, a finance and economics major from Breakeyville, Quebec, has tallied 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points, while also recoding a +10 rating. Nellis, a 2019 Hobey Baker Award Nominee, leads the Lakers with 128 shots on goal. He has earned WCHA Forward of the Week and NCAA Third Star of the Week honors in 2018-19.   

Calder, a finance and economics major from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, earned WCHA Rookie of the Month honors for both January and February. In addition, has earned WCHA Rookie of the Week and WCHA Co-Rookie of the Week honors. Calder has tallied five goals and 17 assists for 22 points, while garnering a +12 rating in his rookie campaign. 

Fourth-seeded Lake Superior State is set to face top-seeded Minnesota State in a best-of-three WCHA Quarterfinal series this weekend in Mankato, Minnesota. Game times are set for 8:07 p.m. EDT on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary).
