No. 20 Lakers Drop Series Finale Against No. 4 Mavericks

Mitens Save

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The No. 20 Lake Superior State hockey team took on the No. 4 Minnesota State Mavericks in the second game of a Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekend series, falling by a 3-0 final.

The Lakers (7-6-1, 4-5-1-0 WCHA) suffered their first weekend sweep of the season as the Mavericks (12-2-0, 7-1-0-0 WCHA) shut out LSSU and found the back of the net with a goal per period.

Minnesota State scored on a power-play opportunity to make it 1-0 at the 6:36 mark of the first period. Charlie Gerard notched the goal for the Mavericks. Gerard walked the puck out from the left corner and fired a shot from the bootom of the circle that found the lower-right corner of the net.

Parker Tuomie then tallied a goal 5:55 into the second frame, doubling the lead. Toumie, in the slot, deflected a shot — taken by Connor Mackey from the right point — for the goal.

The Lakers pulled their goaltender Mareks Mitens (2-4-0) for the extra attacker late in the third, but Minnesota State added another goal to their lead with an empty-net goal scored by Josh French with 38 seconds remaining.

Mitens had 20 saves on 22 shots faced. Dryden McKay (5-2-0) recorded a 23-save shutout.

Minnesota State was successful on one out of three power plays, while Lake State was 0-for-5.

The Lakers return to action next weekend when they travel to Fairbanks to take on Alaska on Dec. 7-8. Puck drop is set for 11 p.m. EST.
