Calder Named WCHA Co-Rookie of the Week

Ashton Calder was named WCHA Co-Rookie of the Week

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Ashton Calder has been named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Co-Rookie of the Week, as announced by conference officials on Monday.

Calder, a freshman forward from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, made his first collegiate goal count — netting the game-winning marker in Lake Superior State's (6-3-1, 3-2-1-0 WCHA) 5-0 road win last Friday at then-No. 10 Bowling Green. He scored 15:29 into the game, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish. The Lakers added on one goal in the second period and three more in the final stanza.

On Saturday night, Calder tallied his first collegiate assist on Lake Superior State's first goal of the game, which tied the contest at 1-1.

Calder's one goal, one game-winning goal and two points last weekend all tied for the WCHA rookie lead, while helping the No. 20 Lakers jump into the USCHO.com poll for the first time since Nov. 7, 2016.

This is Calder's first career WCHA weekly award.

Lake Superior State returns to Taffy Abel Arena this weekend for a two-game WCHA series against Northern Michigan. The games are scheduled for 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

Tickets may be purchased at the Norris Center Ticket Office or at lssulakers.com/tickets. For additional ticket information, call (906) 635-2602.
