Lakers defeat Nipissing 4-0 to capture weekend sweep

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- After picking up a 3-1 win on Friday, the Lake Superior State hockey team defeated Nipissing in exhibition play by a 3-0 final on Saturday night.

With the majority of the first period scoreless, LSSU got on the board at the tail end when Collin Saccoman notched a goal with 1.9 seconds remaining. Max Humitz and Lukas Kaelble assisted on the tally.

The second period was scoreless on both sides.

In the third frame, Lake State secured three more goals. At the 11:51 mark, Max Humitz extended the Lake State lead to 2-0 after a goal that stood following a review. Brendan McKay and Brayden Gelsinger recorded the helpers. Shortly after, Humitz scored once again, assisted by Gelsinger and Saccoman at the 13:29 mark. LSSU's final goal of the game was scored by Bryan Basilico from William Riedell and Miroslav Mucha, giving the Lakers a 4-0 lead with just over three minutes to go in the game. 

The offensive effort from Lake State was evident not just by the goals - LSSU had 54 shots on goal, compared to Nipissing's 16.

Mareks Mitens started the game in net and played the first two periods, recording seven saves. Roman Bengert entered the game for the third period and stopped all nine of his shots faced.

Lake State has next weekend off and returns to action for a pair of conference contests against Alabama Huntsville on Oct. 26 and 27. 

"We played sixty good minutes. We're going to have to be prepped in the bye week and get ready for Alabama Huntsville," said head coach Damon Whitten. "Our captains are making a great impact both on and off the ice an enhancing the culture of the team."

Laker Hockey is back in action at home for Great Lake State Weekend Nov. 2 and 3 as they face the University of Michigan. Game time on Friday is 7:30 p.m. and Saturday is 7 p.m. Tickets for these games are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors and $10 for children (ages 17 and under).
