Lakers Open 2018 With Home Stand Against Bemidji State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.— The Lake Superior State hockey team returns to Taffy Abel Arena for the first time in 2018 playing host to Bemidji State in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series this weekend.

The Lakers are 5-12-4 overall this season with a 3-8-3 mark in the WCHA. The Beavers are 8-6-5, 5-4-4.

Last Time Out:
In their last action, LSSU defeated non-conference Arizona State, 4-1, to finish third in the Three Rivers Classic in Pittsburgh, Pa. Lake State fell 5-0 to Robert Morris in the tournament opener.

J.T. Henke, Brayden Gelsinger and Ian Johnston registered goals in the win over the Sun Devils. Nick Kossoff turned aside 48-of-49 shots faced earning a spot on the Three River Classic All-Tournament Team and WCHA goaltender of the week honors.

Scouting the Beavers:
BSU enters this weekend's series riding a four-game winning streak picking up a conference sweep over Alabama-Huntsville last weekend. The Beavers currently sit in fifth place in the conference standings with 24 points.

Forwards Kyle Bauman and Gerry Fitzgerald share the team lead with 20 points this season. Jay Dickman is the leading goal scorer with 11.

Senior goaltender Michael Bitzner leads the Beavers with a 9-5-5 record this season and a .910 save percentage.

Laker Leaders:
Henke has been Lake State's biggest offensive weapon this season. Henke's 16 points in WCHA play is No.6 the league and leads the team with 22 points.

Junior forward Max Humitz has been the leading goal scorer for the Lakers so far with nine total goals (5 in the WCHA). Anthony Nellis is second with seven goals on the year.

Kossoff has been the leader in between the pipes this season owning a 4-6-2 record with 431 saves for a .913 percentage.

On The Horizon:
After this weekend's series, Lake State will continue its four-game home stand next weekend welcoming in rival Ferris State (Jan.12-13) for a conference clash.
