Lakers Post Four Third Period Goals, Earn Series Split

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.— The Lake Superior State hockey team erupted with four third period goals Saturday as it defeated Alaska-Fairbanks, 4-1, to earn a Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekend spilt. 

 

With the win, which comes on the heels of a 5-3 loss in Fridays opener, the Lakers move to 4-8-3 overall with 3-4-3 mark in the WCHA. The Nanooks slip to 3-9-3, 2-5-2.

 

"I thought we responded extremely well tonight," said Lake Superior State coach Damon Whitten. "I thought it was a complete effort by almost everyone."

 

Lake Superior held a, 31-20, shot advantage on the night and converted 1-of-3 power play opportunities. The Nooks were 1-of-6 with the man advantage.

 

Tyler Anderson struck first for LSSU with his first goal of the season at the 1:50 mark in the third period on an assists from Chase Gamelin  and Max Humitz

 

Senior forward J.T Henke found the back of the net for his third goal of the season, second of the series, on an assist from Anthony Nellis and Humitz.

 

Nellis (5) and Diego Cuglietta (3) added the final two goals to ice the game for the Lake State. 

 

Junior netminder Nick Kossoff turned in a solid outing between the pipes recording 19 saves while earning his third win of the season. 

 

Ryker Leer scored the lone goal of the night for Alaska at the 15:49 mark in the first period. 

 

Lake Superior will return to Taffy Abel Arena next weekend (Dec. 8 & 9) as they host league-leading Minnesota State in a WCHA tilt.
