Lakers Host Alaska for Weekend Series

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.—After recording a, 6-0, shutout win in last Saturday's exhibition over the USA Hockey U18 National Development Program, the Lake Superior State hockey team returns to Western Collegiate Hockey Association action this weekend hosting Alaska (Fairbanks) for a two-game series inside Taffy Abel Arena.

 

The Lakers own a 3-8-3 record overall this season with a 2-4-2 mark in the WCHA. The Nanooks are 4-10-2, 2-7-1.

 

Last Time Out:

LSSU posted six unanswered goals on a USNDP team the featuring some of the nation's top young talent. 

 

Juniors Antony Nellis posted two goals Gage Torrel notched two goals in the win. Bryan Basilico and Max Humitz finished with a goal apiece. 

 

Freshman netminder Mareks Mitens was a perfect 24-of-24 on save opportunities on the night. 

 

WCHA Standings:

Lake State currently sits in a three-way tie with Alaska (Fairbanks) and Bemidji State for eighth place in the conference standings. Each program has totaled eight points to this point in the season. 

 

All Time Series:

The Lakers possess the edge in the all-time series with the Nooks, 36-17-7, and have posted a 26-9-1 mark inside the friendly confines of Taffy Abel Arena. In their last meeting on Feb. 18, 2017, Lake Superior and Alaska skated to a 3-3 tie in Fairbanks.

 

Laker Leaders:

Senior forward J.T Henke has topped the scoring charts for LSSU all season. Henke's 17 total points on the season rank No.15 nationally and his 12 points in league action put him No.2 behind C.J Suess of Minnesota State.

 

Humitz leads the Lakers in goal scoring this season with seven. Nellis is second on the team with five goals.

 

Mitens and junior Nick Kossoff have shared the responsiblites in between the pipes this season for the Lakers. Mitens owns a 1-4-1 record this season and a .895 save percentage. Kossoff is 2-4-1 with a .912 save percentage.

 

Nanook Leaders:

Kyler Hope leads the scoring attack for the Nooks with six goals and seven assists for a team best 13 points. Justin Woods is the leading goal scorer seven so far on the season.

 

Anton Martinsson has received the bulk of the reps in the net for Alaska this season posting a 1-5-1 record with a .891 save percentage.

 

After this weekend's series with Alaska, the Lakers will welcome league-leading Minnesota State.
