Lakers Down Alabama Huntsville, 3-1, in Series Opener

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.— Diego Cuglietta, Jake Hand and Max Humitz found the back of the net Friday as the Lake Superior State Hockey team defeated Alabama Huntsville, 2-1, in a Western Intercollegiate Hockey Association matchup.

With the win, the Lakers improve to 3-7-3 overall with a 2-3-2 mark in WCHA competition. The Chargers fall to 3-7-1, 2-2-1.

Cuglietta, a junior, scored on the power play at the 5:18 mark in the first period for his fourth goal of the year. Kyle Chatham and Hampus Erikkson recorded assists on the play.

With under two minutes left to play in the first, Hand connected on his fourth goal of the season on an assist from Aidan Wright.

The Chargers lone score of the night came in the final minute of the second period on a goal by Madison Dunn.

Humitz fired an empty netter with eight seconds left in regulation to wrap up the victory for the Lake Superior. With the goal, Humitz bumps his season total to six which leads the team.

Junior Nick Kossoff got the nod in between the pipes and made 26 saves on 27 shots faced. Kossoff improves his record to 2-3-2 this season with the win.

LSSU finished the night 1-of-5 on power play opportunities. UAH was held scoreless in six chances with the man advantage. The Chargers outshot the Lakers, 27-22.

Lake State is back in action tomorrow at 8:07 p.m. as they close out the WCHA weekend road trip with UAH.
