Laker take on AHU this weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.—The Lake Superior State hockey team will travel south this weekend as it squares off with Alabama Huntsville in a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.

Coming off a 2-2 tie and a 5-2 loss in last weekend's series at Bowling Green, The Lakers (2-7-3 overall, 1-3-2 in WCHA) are looking make some headway in the conference standings with the Chargers sitting at 3-6-1, 2-1-1.

UAH swept their series with Alaska Anchorage last weekend and are riding a three-game win streak entering Friday's contest. Puck will drop at 8:07 p.m. on both nights.

Lake Superior swept the season series, 4-0, last season and own a 10-6-2 advantage in the all-time series with Alabama Huntsville.

LSSU enters play as the No.9-ranked team in the country with a 26 percent (12-of-46) success rate on the power play. Through five conference games, the Lakers rank fifth in the WCHA with a 20 percent (5-of-25) success rate with the man advantage.

UAH tops the WCHA stats column in power play efficiency with a 47.1 percent (8-of-17) success rate. The Chargers also lead the league in scoring offense averaging four goals per contest.

Senior forward J.T Henke paces the Lake State offense and is tied for the league lead in points with 15 thus far. Henke notched a goal and an assist in last weekend's series with the Falcons.

Sophomore forward Max Humitz and Junior Anthony Nellis share the team lead with five goals. Brayden Gelsinger, Diego Cuglietta and Jake Hand have each tallied three goals this season.

Junior goaltender Nick Kossoff leads LSSU with a 227 saves on the season with a .919 save percentage in six starts. Freshman Mareks Mitens owns a .893 save percentage in six starts this season.

UAH is led offensively by senior forward Josh Kestner who has amassed nine points with six goals and three assists on the season. Brennan Saulnier is second on the team with six goals and a pair of assists.

Chargers goaltender Jordan Uhelski owns a 3-4-1 record with .901 save percentage this season.

After this weekend's series, the Lakers will return to Taffy Abel Arena for an exhibition with the U.S 18 & Under National team Saturday, Nov.25 at 5 p.m.
