EAST LANSING, Mich. – Completing their weekend series against Michigan State, the Lake Superior State hockey team suffered its first sweep of the season, as the Spartans (4-2-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten) scored four goals in the second period en route to a 6-0 win over the Lakers.

After having nearly rallied from a 4-0 deficit the night before, the Lakers (1-5-2, 0-1-1 WCHA) found themselves trailing by that same score towards the end of the second period. This time, however, there was no rally in store for them, as Spartan goaltender John Lethemon handed Lake Superior their first shutout of the season.

Michigan State got on the board late in the first period, when Mitch Lewandowski converted on a power play opportunity to make it 1-0 Spartans.

In the second period, Michigan State got even strength goals from Brennan Sanford, Mitch Eliot and Jake Smith.  Smith's goal came on a delayed penalty, as Laker defenseman Aiden Wright was called for interference.

The Spartans made it 5-0 with 22 seconds left in the second period, when Lewandowski scored his second goal of the night – and his second on the power play.

To start the third period, the Lakers made a change in net, as Nick Kossoff, who played on Friday night, came in to relieve Mareks Mitens, who made 19 saves on 24 shots.

Michigan State added one more goal, this time from David Keefer on another power play opportunity.  The Spartans were 3 for 8 on the man advantage, while the Lakers went 0 for 4.

Kossoff stopped 9 of 10 shots in relief of Mitens.  Lethemon saved all 15 shots thrown his way for his first shutout of the year.

Lake Superior is back home on Friday, November 3rd, when Alaska-Anchorage pays a visit to Sault Ste. Marie.  The Seawolves (0-5-1, 0-0-0 WCHA) were idle this weekend and have yet to begin league play.  Tickets may be purchased at the Norris Center Ticket Office or online at lssulakers.com/tickets.
