SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State hockey head coach Damon Whitten announced Thursday (Jan. 19) morning that sophomore defenseman Owen Headrick has left the program, forgoing this season and his final two years of eligibility with the program.

Headrick, who was selected by the Erie Otters in the 14th round (261st overall) of the 2013 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, gave his formal commitment to Otters General Manager Dave Brown and agreed to a standard player agreement with the team.

Through 24 games with the Lakers this season, Headrick was tied for fourth on the team in scoring with 15 points on two goals and 13 assists and ranked tied for fifth in WCHA defenseman scoring. Despite early success to start the season, the native of Garden River, Ontario, had contributed just three assists in the team's last 12 contests.

In 63 career games with LSSU, Headrick accumulated seven goals and 20 assists.

"We were disappointed to hear of Owen's decision to leave the team midway through the season," said Whitten in a statement. "That being said, after meeting with him this morning we understand his desire to pursue a different hockey path and wish him the best in his future endeavors."
