Headrick named WCHA Co-Defensive Player of the Week

EDINA, Minn.- After scoring an NCAA best six points in last weekend's sweep over Michigan State, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association has named Lake Superior State sophomore defenseman Owen Headrick the league's Co-Defensive Player of the Week.

Headrick led all NCAA skaters with five assists and six points, sparking the Lakers' season-opening sweep of visiting Michigan State.  Headrick scored a goal and two assists in Friday's 6-1 victory over MSU and tallied three assists in the team's 7-3 win over the Spartans on Saturday. Prior to his consecutive three-point outings, Headrick had only one multi-point game during his freshman campaign, a two assist effort.

The Garden River, Ont., native finished with a +2 rating on the weekend, and was on the ice for three even strength goals and four power-play tallies by the Lakers. He also had nine shots on goal and blocked a pair of shots defensively. With the help of Headrick, the LSSU power play team hit on 6-of-16 (.375) opportunities on the weekend.

This is Headrick's first career WCHA weekly award.

Sharing the weekly title with Headrick, Michael Bitzer posted consecutive shutouts in Bemidji State's pair of 2-0 victories over Northern Michigan last weekend.

Other Lakers nominated for weekly awards, J.T. Henke (2-2--4) was an honorable mention for Offensive Player of the Week after tying for the points lead among WCHA forwards. Freshman Brayden Gelsinger received an honorable mention nod for the week's top rookie after tying for the national lead among freshmen with four points and was +2 in the weekend series.
