Lakers blanked by Ferris State, suffer sweep

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- Lake Superior State men's ice hockey dropped their second straight Western Collegiate Hockey Association game and final game of the season 3-0, Saturday evening. The Lakers and were blanked by goaltender CJ Motte, who earned his 64th career win- a Ferris State career record.

The teams skated through a scoreless first period, in which Lakers' starting goaltender Gordon Defiel made 29 saves while allowing just two goals during the game. Motte, in search of Ferris State's all-time win record started in net for the Bulldogs and made 24 saves in his fifth shutout on the season.

The Bulldogs started the scoring for the evening 2:13 minutes into the second period. Kenny Babinski scored his sixth goal of the season with assists coming from Chad McDonald and Justin Buzzeo.

The teams went to the lockers with the Bulldogs leading 1-0 after two periods. Both teams were unsuccessful on their one power-play opportunity in the period.

Vying to move up to the seventh spot in the WCHA playoff standings, the Lakers turned on the pressure on Motte in the final frame. The Lakers were unable to capitalize on their two power-play opportunities during the third period and surrendered a late goal by Justin Buzzeo that put the game out of reach. The goal was the eighth by Buzzeo with McDonald picking up his second assist of the evening.

Gerald Mayhew lifted a puck from center ice that trickled all the way down into an empty Laker goal with 4:06 remaining and Defiel pulled in favor of an extra attacker.

The Lakers completed the regular season with a record of 8-26-2 and 7-20-1 in WCHA play. They will face the winners of the Macnaughton Cup following Saturday evening's results in Mankato, Minn.
