Lake Superior State beats MTU 3-1


HOUGHTON - Zac MacVoy, Chad Nehring, Rick Schofield and Simon Gysbers notched two points each for the Lake Superior State hockey team during Sunday's 3-1 victory at Michigan Tech during the second round of the 2009 Superior Cup.

The Lakers finished 1-1-0 and defeated MTU for the first time in the three years of the Superior Cup. They improved their tournament record to 1-2-0 against MTU and are 1-3-2 overall in the Superior Cup.

MacVoy netted the first goal for the night at 6:21 in the first period. MacVoy's goal was assisted by Nehring and Gysbers. Nehring scored a power-play goal in the second period with assists going to Schofield and Gysbers.

Michigan Tech scored its only goal in the third at the 18:42. The Huskies were killing a penalty, but had goaltender Kevin Genoe pulled in favor of an extra attacker.

Pat Aubry tallied a power-play goal at 19:10 to regain the Lakers' two-goal cushion. Schofield and MacVoy were credited with assists.

The Lakers were 2-for-9 on the power-play and held Michigan Tech to 0-for-5.

LSSU junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 28 saves for the night. LSSU out-shot the Huskies, 32-29.

The Lakers play host to Canisius at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and Saturday during Great Lake State Weekend.
