Lakers play first CCHA road series

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State will play its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association road series at Western Michigan at 7:35 p.m. Friday and Saturday night at Lawson Arena.
LSSU (4-4-0 overall, 1-3-0 CCHA) and Western Michigan (4-2-0 overall, 0-2-0 CCHA) will meet for the first time since playing each other in the first round of CCHA Playoffs last year. WMU won the series, 2-1, in front of an average of 400 fans per night due to it being spring break in Kalamazoo. The Lakers will be playing in front of a loud and much more hostile Lawson Arena crowd this time.
The Lakers are on the road for back-to-back series after playing seven of their first nine games at home. Both teams are coming off of losses from last weekend. LSSU lost 5-1 and 6-3 to fourth-ranked Michigan last weekend, while WMU was swept 2-1 and 5-3 by Michigan State.
The Lakers head to Western Michigan with four of their seven goal scorers from last year's regular-season series. Senior forward Zac MacVoy, junior forward Chad Nehring, and sophomore forward Dan Barczuk and sophomore defenseman Kyle Haines combined to total seven points against the Broncos last February.
This season, MacVoy is tied for fifth in the CCHA in overall points with 1-7-8 and tied for second in assists, while Nehring is tied for second in total goals with five.
WMU returns four out of their five goal scorers from last year's series. Kyle O'Kane netted one goal, and Ian Slater and Greg Squires both had one goal and one assist in the matchup. Chris Clackson netted two goals and one assist for the weekend. Sophomore forward J.J. Crew (4-2-6), freshman forward Trevor Elias (3-3-6) and Squires (0-6-6) lead the Broncos in points so far in 2009-10.
The LSSU-WMU series will be broadcast live on 99.5 Yes-FM with a free audio feed on www.yesfm.net.
