U-of-M takes Game 2 from the Lakers


SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State dropped its second game to the University of Michigan, 6-3, Saturday night at the Taffy Abel Arena.

Lake Superior is now 4-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Michigan is 4-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the CCHA.

LSSU got on the board first, at 1:52 of the first, with a goal from junior forward Chad Nehring. Sophomore foward Fred Cassiani and senior defenseman Steven Kaunisto got the assists. Michigan's Ben Winnett tied it at 2:10 of the first.

The Lakers took the lead again at 5:41 of the first with a goal from Cassiani assisted by junior defenseman Tyson Hobbins and junior forward Will Acton. Michigan answered again at 13:38 on a goal by Chris Brown.

At 18:32 of the first, Michigan took its first lead, 3-2, with a goal from Matt Rust.

Michigan scored a power-play goal and an empty-net goal in the third period to make it 5-2. LSSU came back at 18:59 with an unassisted goal from Acton, 5-3. Michigan scored a power-play goal at 19:50.

Laker goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson saved 30 shots, while Michigan's Bryan Hogan stopped 35.

Michigan was 2-for-7 on the power play and held Lake Superior to 0-for-5.

The Lakers wrapped up a six-game homestand and head to Western Michigan Nov. 6-7.
