SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State wraps up its six-game hockey homestand with a series against fifth-ranked Michigan at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena.
Michigan (2-2-0 overall) is making its first trip to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., since November of 2007. The Lakers (4-2-0 overall) are winless against Michigan since February of 2007. This will be the Wolverines' first Central Collegiate Hockey Association series of 2009-10, while the Lakers are 1-1-0 after splitting last weekend's home series with Ohio State.
Both games will be broadcast live on Yes-FM 99.5 with a free audio webcast on www.yesfm.net. A pay-per-view video feed is available on the B2 Network. The Laker Hockey Pregame Show begins at 6 p.m. on WKNW AM 1400.
Both Michigan and LSSU return all but one defenseman and their starting goaltenders from last year's teams, but the defining story in the series could be special teams.
Lake Superior State's power play leads the CCHA at 30.8 percent. Senior forward Chad Nehring has a league-leading four power-play goals so far.
"We are really happy about our power-play," said LSSU coach Jim Roque during "Laker Hockey Live" broadcast Monday from Moloney's Alley. "Guys are producing and making the other teams play. They are making teams think a bit more about being too aggressive against us."
Senior forward Zac MacVoy leads the Lakers in points with 1-6-7, followed by Nehring at 4-2-6 and senior defenseman Simon Gysbers at 2-4-6. Junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson is 4-1-0 with a 2.07 goals-against average and .925 save percentage.
Junior forward Matt Rust (2-3-5) and sophomore forward Robbie Czarnik (2-2-4) lead Michigan. All-CCHA forward Louie Caporusso, who scored two goals against the Lakers last season, is scoreless so far in 2009-10. Junior goaltender Bryan Hogan, with a 2.01 goals-against average and .906 save percentage, has played in all four games for the Wolverines, whose most-recent outing was a 3-2 loss at fourth-ranked Boston University.
Campus Life is sponsoring a tailgate at 6 p.m. Friday at the Norris Center. WLSO 90.1 FM will provide music, and hot dogs and hot chocolate will be served. The tailgate is free and open to the public. Inter-Greek Council, Activities Board, WLSO 90.1 FM and Campus Life are giving away free bandanas to the first 1,000 fans attending Friday's game.
On Saturday, LSSU Residence Life will sponsor Trick-or-Treating at the Row Houses on campus and invite the kids continue on to the Taffy Abel Arena, where the LSSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will pass out candy during second intermission on the upper level of Taffy Abel Arena. A Halloween costume contest and free Skate with the Lakers will follow the game.
The second annual Pink in the Rink, held in conjunction with last weekend's series against Ohio State, raised more than $14,000 for local health organizations.
"I want to thank Danna Sanderson, and Stan and Ann Jakaitis for everything they do for Pink in the Rink," Roque said. "Stan Jakaitis wanted me to make sure I thank the (Alpha Theta) Omega house for everything they did this weekend, and also Kris Dunbar, Stacey Swanson and the Taffy Abel staff for getting everything set up."
