Lakers announce 2009-10 hockey schedule


SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State hockey team opens 2009-10 season on Oct. 3 with an exhibition game against Nipissing and plays seven of its first nine games at Taffy Abel Arena.

The Lakers, whose Central Collegiate Hockey Association cluster partners for 2009-10 are Northern Michigan, Alaska and Nebraska-Omaha, play six of their last eight regular-season games on the road.

LSSU travels to Minnesota-Duluth on Oct. 9 and Michigan Tech on Oct. 11 for the third annual Superior Cup. The Lakers, along with Union and Bentley, participate in the RPI Tournament in Troy, N.Y., during Thanksgiving weekend.

Great Lake State Weekend, on Oct. 16-17, features a non-conference hockey series between Canisius. The Lakers play their CCHA opener the following weekend against Ohio State. The Oct. 23-24 series is also Parents Weekend.

LSSU's only other non-conference series is Jan. 3-4 at Robert Morris. The Lakers travel to Western Michigan, UNO, Bowling Green State, Michigan State, Miami, Alaska and NMU. In addition to OSU, they play host to Michigan, Alaska, NMU, UNO, Notre Dame and Ferris State.

Laker Hockey alumni notes: Former LSSU hockey player and assistant coach Paul Jerrard ('87) has been named assistant coach of the Texas Stars, which is the American Hockey League affiliate of the Dallas Stars. Jerrard was an assistant with the Iowa Stars from 2005-08 and spent last season with the Iowa Chops, which is an AHL affiliate for Anaheim...The Binghamton Senators, an AHL affiliate for Ottawa, re-signed former LSSU defenseman Derek A. Smith (2004-07). Smith totaled 7-17-24 in 75 games last season...Former LSSU defenseman Steven Oleksy (see above '09) is expected to sign with the Bakersfield Condors of the East Coast Hockey League. Oleksy played for Team USA in the 2009 IIHF InLine Hockey World Championships in Ingolstadt, Germany, June 7-13. He contributed two goals and two assists as Team USA finished 4-2 and won a silver medal. Team USA played for the gold medal for the eighth time in the tournament's 14-year history and lost to Sweden 7-6 in the championship game. It was Oleksy's second appearance in the world championships...Former Laker forward Trent Campbell (see below '07) scored the Kelly Cup game-winning goal as South Carolina defeated Alaska 4-2 in the ECHL championship series finals. Campbell finished the playoffs with six goals and 24 points in 23 games.
