Big Rapids, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's golf teams travelled down state Saturday to play in tournaments this weekend.

The men's team competed in the Ferris State Invitational at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Michigan. The women's team travelled to play at Bay City Country Club hosted by Saginaw Valley University.

On the men's side, Gavin MacIver, Lake State's No. 1 and senior captain, carded a team leading score of 75 in round one.  Behind MacIver was freshman Zander Park, Lake State's No. 3, who shot a 77 with two birdies in his first collegiate stroke play tournament.

No. 2 golfer on the Laker squad, Nick Oosterhof, birdied two holes and carded a 78. Ryan Page, No. 4 golfer, shot a 79.  Rounding out the lineup was Connor Kintz with an 81. Lake State's team score after round one was a 309 finishing eighth, nine strokes off of fourth place.

"The boys showed a lot of patience and determination out there today," said volunteer assistant coach Jason Kerr. "We only made five birdies as a team, which I believe set us back from the leaders.

"Tomorrow we just have to be more aggressive to gain a few spots."

The men tee off tomorrow afternoon in the final round of the Bulldog Invitational.

On the women's side, sophomore captain Taylor Simoneau shot an 80 in the first round while Naomi Keyte carded a team best of 76.  Senior, Tatiana Hulan, scored an 87 while freshman Alyshia Suleman scored an 81.  Finishing the lineup was Maddie Whittet with an 87.

Lake State is looking to improve on their score in round two on Sunday morning. The Lakers are tied for sixth entering tomorrow's round.  The first tee time for tomorrow is scheduled at 9:16 a.m.
